Phillis Wheatley strove to acquire an education and taught herself (with some help from her masters, but not through school) how to read and write eloquently at a young age, and she became published at the young age of eighteen. Wheatley viewed education as a venue for freedom. Students today (especially grade school through high school) have a contrary view of education. From an American perspective, education today has become a requirement rather than a privilege. Students see going to school as a chore rather than an opportunity that a majority of other nations in the world lack. In addition to this, standardized testing has robbed teachers of the freedom to teach the way they want to. Instead of leeway and freedom to plan classroom activities, teachers are forced to teach a strict curriculum to prepare the students for a single test. This standardization causes slower students anxiety and advanced students no challenge. A teacher must deal with those struggling to pass the test, while also placating those who already know the material. In this way, education has become a required, standardized nightmare for many school districts in America.
