We begin with a publication from Gilbert White who is one of the earliest writers to discuss hybridity in nature. Though the term hibrid has been in use since 1623, mostly to denote the mixing of species in a pejorative way, White begins to clearly define hybrids as not only a mixing of species that are infertile, but a mixing that can produce benefits within a dying species. Here he notes that some hybrid flowers help compensate for defense mechanisms that are lacking in their hereditary species.
